One-Year Trading Learning Roadmap with Monthly Milestones

Most new traders spend two years losing money before learning what they should have studied in month two. A structured year compresses that timeline. The roadmap below assumes 10-15 hours per week and one instrument (US large-cap equities or EUR/USD forex).

Months 1-2: Market Mechanics

Month 3: Chart Reading

Month 4: One Setup, One Indicator

Pick one setup (e.g., pullback to 20-EMA in trend) and one indicator (RSI or VWAP). Ignore everything else. Milestone: 50 demo trades of this single setup, win rate and R-multiple tracked.

Month 5: Risk Management

Position sizing (fixed fractional, 0.5-1% risk per trade), R-multiples, expectancy, drawdown math. Milestone: write a one-page risk plan specifying max risk per trade, max daily loss, max weekly loss, and max open positions.

Month 6: Demo Evaluation

Trade demo full-strategy for the month as if live. Milestone: 100 demo trades, positive expectancy ≥0.2R, max drawdown under 10%. If you fail, repeat months 4-5 with adjustments.

Month 7: Micro Live

Fund a small account ($500-$2,000). Trade micro size. Milestone: 30 live trades at micro risk, discipline intact, journal reviewed weekly.

Month 8: Quarter Risk

Raise to 25% of planned full risk. Milestone: 50 live trades, expectancy within 0.2R of demo. Build the habit of pre-trade checklists.

Month 9: Full Strategy Live

Scale to planned full risk (1% per trade). Milestone: 50 live trades at full risk, no rule violations, max drawdown under 8%.

Month 10: Edge Refinement

Analyze 200+ trades by setup, session, market regime. Cut the bottom-quartile setup; double weight on the top. Milestone: written edge audit identifying which setups make money and which bleed.

Month 11: Psychology and Process

Address recurring discipline failures: revenge trading, oversizing, early exits. Milestone: documented rules with automatic responses (e.g., "after 2 losers, mandatory 30-minute break").

Month 12: System Iteration

Formalize the system into a written plan, forward-test 3 months, then re-evaluate. Milestone: a complete trading plan document and a year-end review comparing actual results to the month-6 demo baseline.

A year of structured work beats three years of unstructured screen time. The roadmap is the discipline.
