Session Volume Profile for Intraday Trading
A session Volume Profile is not static — it develops bar by bar. Trading it intraday means reading the developing POC, VAH, and VAL as they form, not waiting for the close.
The developing profile
From the open, a new profile begins. After A-period (first 30 minutes) you have a thin developing POC. By C-period (90 minutes) the Initial Balance and value area take shape. The developing POC is the live fairest price; the developing VAH and VAL are live acceptance edges.
Open types relative to yesterday's VA
- Open inside prior VA: balanced day likely. Fade moves to prior VAH/VAL back toward developing POC.
- Open above prior VAH with acceptance (2+ 5-min closes above): trend day up. Buy pullbacks to developing POC. Stop below prior VAH.
- Open below prior VAL with acceptance: trend day down. Sell rallies to developing POC.
- Open-drive (single prints, no rotation in A/B period): strong trend. Do not fade. Trade with the drive; trail stops under developing POC.
Intraday entry tactics
Developing POC pullback (trend days)
After a trend-day open, wait for price to pull back to the developing POC. Enter on the first candle that closes back in the trend direction off the POC. Stop: 1×ATR beyond the developing POC. Target: the prior session's VAH (longs) or VAL (shorts), then trail.
VAH/VAL rejection (balanced days)
Inside a balanced session, price pokes beyond developing VAH/VAL and rejects. Enter the fade on the 5-min close back inside the VA. Stop: 2 ticks beyond the rejected edge. Target: developing POC.
Developing POC migration
Track the developing POC every 30 minutes. If it steps higher in 3 consecutive periods, value is migrating up — hold longs, raise stops to the prior POC. If it steps lower, hold shorts.
Time rules
- A/B period (first hour): do not trade fades. Profile is too thin. Only trade open-drives with the direction.
- C–F period (90 min–3 hrs): best fade and pullback window. Value area is defined.
- Last hour: avoid new entries. Profile is closing; liquidity thins.
The session profile is a live auction map. Read the developing POC's migration and the open type, then trade with the value the session is building — not the value you assumed at the open.
